#14 6th Generation Isuzu D-MAX – Bold, dependable and reliable

06:44

One of the all-time legendary pick-ups in Kenya is the Isuzu D-MAX. Its DNA comes from a company renowned for making rugged and tough trucks that have continued to make their mark in Kenya for 50 years. The Isuzu D-MAX is now in its 6thgeneration. The 6th generation Isuzu D-MAX has a bigger bolder look, with smooth and well-proportioned styling. The pick-up has grown by 260 mm, which is more than 5%, longer than the previous model. This translates into an increase in interior space and load box size, a noticeable improvement from the 5th generation D-MAX.

Exterior
A strong design presence is visible at the front with its striking new interpretation of the Isuzu D-MAX logo and grille. On the high-end models, chrome grille and bonnet garnishes are standard equipment while the entry level specification comes adorned with a black grille. Projector style headlamps are standard on high-end models for improved visibility. The smooth flowing lines of the headlamp clusters provide a seamless transition from the front of the vehicle though to the side.
Sleek profile
Side steps with a non-slip upper surface are fitted as standard on the high-end models, optional on other models, for easier entry and exit from the vehicle. The side steps also assist in inhibiting stone damage to lower body paintwork when travelling on gravel or off-road. All 4WD versions of the 6th generation Isuzu D-MAX incorporate steel wheel arch wings in place of the plastic over wings used on the previous model.

Also noticeable are the larger wheel openings, which add to the overall bold appearance of the pick-up. The intercooler on turbocharged models has been moved forward away from a high mounted position to remove any projections on the top of the bonnet that might cause harm in a pedestrian accident. Bold new lamp clusters are visible at the rear. The light cluster offers bright and clear rear-end lighting.

They also flow through to the sides of the load box for side-on visibility. High-end models feature rear LED lights for better illumination in the daylight and extended life. The restyled bumper rounds off the rear view of the 6th generation Isuzu D-MAX. On the high-specification models the bumper incorporates a wide, non-slip upper surface with chrome highlights.

Performance
Underneath the bonnet is a selection of three refined power units. First on the list is a 2.5-litre low pressure turbo diesel unit. The power plant is carried over from the previous model. Power output is recorded at 58 kW (77 hp) and 170 Nm of torque.
Refined power unit
Next in line is the proven 2.5-litre D-TEQ engine with an output of 85 kW (113 hp) and 280 Nm of torque. The power plant needs 7.7-litres of low sulphur diesel per 100 km. The top of the range 6th generation Isuzu D-MAX features an advanced 3.0-litre D-TEQ power unit with 130 kW (174 hp) and 380 Nm of torque. Paired with the 3.0-litre D-TEQ power unit is a new 5-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission.

Interior
The interior of the pick-up provides a discreet balance between form and function. All controls are positioned logically and intuitively and are easy to reach and operate. The dashboard and centre console is sporty in appearance and functional in design.
Cockpit
All switches and controls are logically positioned so they fall easily and naturally to hand for excellent ergonomics. Heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning controls are all large diameter rotary type controls placed within easy reach of the driver. The steering wheel is a three spoke design with a soft grip covering and tilt adjustment. Multiple storage compartments add convenient and secure stowage for smaller items.
Rear seating

An increase in rear head room has been achieved through the increased height of the vehicle and a revised angle for the seat backrest adds further comfort, especially over long journeys. On Double Cab models the rear seats have a 60/40 split. The rear seat can be folded up to allow loading directly on the floor of the vehicle, or folded down to provide a flat load surface. Additional storage compartments are provided in the floor area under the rear seats. The space for rear seat passengers is 25 mm longer than the previous model and is now amongst the largest and roomiest cabin spaces in its class.
5% larger than its predecessor

Verdict

The 6th generation Isuzu D-Max offers great styling, excellent diesel engines and strong all-round performance. It’s also competitively priced and well equipped and should have no trouble convincing buyers of its many merits.
