Hyundai Veloster Turbo

After a successive debut of the Veloster, Hyundai have released a more powerful version called the Veloster Turbo.

The new Turbo charged version is slightly different from its slower Veloster sister thanks to some minor design touches. At the back it loses the trapezoidal centre exhaust and now has two larger free flowing circular pipes.

These new pipes and the new intake manifold also help to give the engine a more robust sound.  At the front it has a bigger, bolder hexagonal front grille. An air splitter sits below the grill as two large fog lamps sit at each end of the aggressive front look. The sexy headlamps now feature an eight individual headlight LED accents.

At the side it has new 18-inch gray wheels with chrome inserts that help differentiate it from its sister. The side skirt has also been restyled to give the side and aggressive look that is further boosted by its large wheel arches.

The rear bumper has also been restyled. It has a protruding characteristic that is enhanced by the new round rear reflectors. The Turbo is also 1.2 inches longer and 0.6 inches wider compared to the normal Veloster.

Under the bonnet is a 1.6 litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The engine has an output of 201hp and 195 lb-ft (foot pound) of torque.

The engine uses 6 litresof fuel per 100km covered. The engine is married to either a standard six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic transmission with Shiftronic and steering wheel-mounted paddle-shifters.

The transmission system is different to the Veloster’s normal EcoShift Dual Clutch Transmission system. EcoShift DCT is tuned for fuel efficiency and not for the performance feel needed for the Veloster Turbo. Power is sent to Kumho Solus tires.

A tuned suspension ensures the tires do their job properly. The Veloster Turbo come fitted with McPherson strut front suspension, coil springs, gas shock absorbers and a 24 mm diameter front stabilizer. The rear suspension is a light-weight V-torsion beam and monotube shock absorbers for ride comfort.

A Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) system is on hand to improve the overall stability of the car. VSM works together with ESC (Electronic Stability Control) and the Motor-Driven electric Power Steering (MDPS) to improve the overall handling of the Veloster Turbo.

It also comes with an impressive braking package that includes four-wheel disc brakes and an Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) with Brake Assist.

Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) automatically adjusts the braking force to the front and rear wheels to offer maximum stopping power. The car is also equipped six airbags to improve occupant safety in case of a crash. 


Rear LED lights

Just like the normal Veloster, the Turbo comes with three doors. The third door is located next to the front passenger door. There is enough room for five occupants and a large boot for storage of goods.

The Veloster Turbo also comes with a large panoramic roof to give the interior open-air feel. There is a large 7-inch touch screen display for infotainment functions.

Circular rear reflectors

Pandora internet radio is intergrated to the system to allow one to stream internet radio from either an iPhone or Android.  One can search music by using voice commands thanks to a new Gracenote MediaVOCS application.

Front sports seats

The system can also connect to an iPod and also display the song details on the screen. The Veloster also comes with an integrated RCA cable and a 115-volt power outlet that allows one to connect a video game console. Information from the console is displayed on the 7-inch multimedia touch screen. A standard 450-watt Dimension Premium Audio system with eight speakers keeps occupants entertained.

The audio system also comes with an eight-inch subwoofer, external amplifier and iPod®/USB/auxiliary input jacks. A Bluetooth hands-free phone system with voice recognition, address book download and audio streaming is standard. The infotainment is also integrated to the rear-view camera and backup warning sensors.

The car also comes with Hyundai’s Blue link system. This allows the driver to enjoy services like voice to text messaging, Point of Interest (POI) web search download, turn-by-turn navigation, and monthly vehicle reporting. It also lets them enjoy safety services such as Automatic Crash Notification (ACN) and Assistance, SOS Emergency Assistance, and Enhanced Roadside Assistance.

Just like all Hyundai cars the new Veloster Turbo is covered by the 5-5-year/60,000-mile fully transferable bumper-to-bumper warranty and Hyundai's 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty. The new Veloster Turbo is ready for the small hatchback market at a starting price of $21950 (Kshs. 2 million excluding taxes)
