Major changes are visible at the front and the rear of the new Audi R8. The unmistakable single-frame grille with the slanting upper corners is now painted in high-gloss black. In the V10 variants the air intake inserts are finished in chrome. The front splitter is now made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) on the new Audi R8 V10 plus. However the major change on the front is the new LED headlights.

The new headlights consist of light-emitting diodes for the high and low beams that have been neatly placed above and below the strip-shaped daytime running lights. The turn signals have also been integrated with the daytime running lights.

At the sides of the new Audi R8 V10 plus top model, housings of the outside mirrors, side blades and the lateral air inlets on the Coupé, are made from CFRP. In the 10-cylinder variants the blades extend outwards further than on the V8 variants. They also have a special edging.

The R8 V8 versions ride on standard 18 inch wheels while the V10 versions ride on cool 19 inch wheels. There are other optional wheels available in either high gloss finish, titanium finish or in black gloss for the Audi R8 V10 Plus. Just like the front, LED lights dominate the rear. They give a bright illumination at night and give the rear a magnificent look. LED turn signals flash towards the direction the car is intended to turn.

The unmistakable Audi R8 rear apron remains unchanged with the gloss black number plate area and the rear air outlets. All models come with two glossy round tailpipes. The Audi R8 Spyder soft top lid and its side parts are now made of CFRP. It also has an elegant, lightweight fabric top that sits on aluminum and magnesium linkages.

The roof can open and close in less than 20 seconds at speeds of up to 50km/h. A rear window is visible behind the seats. It can be retracted and extended electronically. The rear window also acts as the wind deflector on the Spyder. In case of a pending rollover, two strong, spring-tensioned sections shoot upwards from the seats.

The R8 is available with two engines. There is a 4.2 litre V8 and a 5.2 litre V10 engine. They are married to either a new 7-speed S tronic or a manual 6-speed transmission system. The new 7-speed automatic dual clutch transmission can be shifted by using a selector lever or by steering wheel shift paddles. The 4.2 litre FSI engine produces 420hp and 430 Nm of torque.

The engine can accelerate the R8 V8 coupe from 0 to 100km/h in just 4.3 seconds with the automatic transmission or 4.6 with manual transmission. Top speed is pegged at 300km/h with S tronic or 302 km/h with a manual transmission. In the Audi R8 V8 Spyder, the times with automatic transmission change to 4.5 seconds and 4.8 seconds with a manual transmission. The top speed values are similar to the Coupe. The engine will need 12.4 litres of fuel to cover 100km. The 5.2 litre V10 FSI engine has an output of 525hp and 530Nm of torque.

The Audi R8 Coupe accelerates from 0 to 100km/h in 3.6 seconds and to a top speed of 314 km/h with the S tronic transmission. With the 6-speed manual system it will need 4.1 seconds to get to 100km/h and has a top speed of 313 km/h.

The Audi R8 V10 Spyder with S tronic will get to 100km/h in just 3.8 seconds while the top speed is pegged at 311km/h. Average fuel consumption is 13.1 litresper 100km covered. The top of the range model, the Audi R8 V10 Plus comes with even more power. It has 550hp and 540Nm of torque.

With S tronic, it will accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in just 3.5 seconds and can achieve a top speed of 317km/h. with a manual transmission this raged R8 Audi can accelerate to 100km/h in just 3.8 seconds and can achieve an amazing top speed of 319km/h! Average fuel consumption is pegged at 14.9 litres per 100km/h. The R8 rides on a high performance double wishbone sports suspension. On the R8 V10 Plus the springs and shock absorbers have been specially tuned for precise handling.

Audi’s magnetic ride adaptive damping is standard on the Audi R8 V10 variants and is optional for the V8 variants. The suspension offers a normal mode and a sports mode at the touch of a button. Braking power is provided by internally ventilated and perforated steel brakes. Aluminium brake calipers with eight pistons are located in the front wheels while the rear wheel brake calipers have 4 pistons. The R8 V10 Plus comes with carbon-ceramic brake discs that offer immense fade free braking power.
Enough room for two occupants |
Inside the R8, the long wheel base provides a comfortable area for two occupants. The interior also has a racing feel thanks to the monoposto, a long arc curve that runs around the cockpit in the area of the driver. The new R8 badge located at the back of the R8 also appears at the gearshift/selector lever, at the door sill trims, in the instrument cluster and on the start screen of the on-board monitor.

Electronic adjustable sports seats are available as standard on the V10 variants and are optional on the V8 variants. Depending on the model variant, the seat upholstery is an Alcantara/leather combination or Fine Nappa. On the Spyder a special pigmentation reduces heating from direct sunlight. The Audi R8 V10 Plus comes with bucket seats that have prominent side sections for better support. Numerous control and trim elements shine with either chrome strips or with black paint. The center console and the handbrake lever are covered with leather, adorned by delicate seams.

In the V10 variants the molding around the standard navigation system is also covered in leather. Behind the steering wheel is the instrument cluster with modified needles. The shift paddles have also been modified as well. All R8 come with a front luggage compartment with 100litres of storage space.

The Coupes have an extra 90 litre of storage space located behind the seats. The Audi R8 V10 and the R8 V10 Plus come with the Audi’s Navigation System Plus and the Bang & Olufsen Sound System as standard. Other options for all R8 variants include a high-beam assistant for the headlights, voice control, parking system plus with reversing camera and many more.

Prices for the new R8 start at € 113,500 (Kshs. 13.4 million) for the V8 Coupe and € 124,800 (Kshs. 15 million) for the V8 Spyder. The V10 variants price starts at € 154,600 (Kshs. 18.2 million) for the Coupe and € 165,900 (Kshs. 20 million) for the V10 Spyder. The top of the range R8 V10 Plus is valued at € 173,200 (Kshs. 21 million).
