BMW M5

BMW M5

For 25 years BMW M5 has been the must have high performance sports saloon car. With the recent make over of the BMW 5 series recently, consisting of aesthetic and performance improvement, the new M5 is the confirmation that BMW is finally getting its groove back.

M DESIGN
To ensure that you don’t confuse it with the regular 5 series, BMW designers have given it unique cosmetic changes at the front, side and rear.
Aggressive front view

The front consists of two side air intakes that have a dynamic curving design. At the centre of the bumper is M characteristic intake that has black flaps that further boost its aggressive front and enable smooth flow of air hence boosting the overall aerodynamics of the car.

Rear View

Smooth lines run from each side of the bonnet and converge in a V formation on top of the famous double - kidney grill. At each side of the grill are the striking bi-xenon headlamps. Thanks to the use of LED on the circular rings and the indicators, the twin round headlights are amazing to look at either during the day or night.

Side View
The side consists of redesigned M polished gills, huge prominently flared wheel arches and lines that connect the front gills to the bulging at the rear wheel. This help to channel air all around the body. The M5 comes with either 19-inch M light-alloy wheels in double-spoke design or optional 20-inch forged rims highlighted by their five slim double spokes. The wheels gracefully display the high-performance brakes with six-piston fixed callipers that further boost it presence as an all round performance machine.

Rear LED Lighting
Since the rear is will be visible most of the time, thanks to the amazing performance of this ultimate driving machine, the designers ensured that it also had to be perfect. A subtle gurney-style rear spoiler on the boot lid ensures that the rear tires stick on the ground at any time.A diffuser integrated into the lower edge of the rear bumper ensures efficient airflow through the back end of the under floor section. Twin tuned exhaust pipes sit at each side of the rear bumper. Amazingly crafted rear L-shaped LED lights give spectators at the rear something to smile about as the M badge warns them that this is not a beast to be joked around with.

Keep off! this is not you average BMW
POWERTRAIN
BMW have ditched the famous V10 engine for a more economical V8 engine. Before you start complaining that it is a huge mistake, let me give you the figures. The high revving direct injected petrol 4.4 litre V8 engine is connected to two huge turbo chargers. The result is an engine that develops an output of 560 hp. I repeat 560 hp! This will take you from 0 to 100km/h in around 4.4 seconds. O to 200km/h is dealt with in just 13 seconds.  Top speed is muzzled at 250km/h but if one orders it with the Driver’s Package the limit is pushed to a top speed of 305km/h. Can I hear an M yea?

560hp V8 Heart
The best news of all is that the generous V8 does not consume so much fuel. Compared to the previous model it uses around 30 percent less fuel (That is around 9.9 litres of fuel for every 100km covered). The driver can adjust the engine performance on a button located at the centre console. There are three modes to choose from "Efficient", "Sport" and "Sport Plus".

Connected to the engine is a seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission Drivelogic system (phew!) It can be operated either in automatic mode or manual mode. In manual mode no clutch pedal is required and the driver can keep his foot on the accelerator during gear changes. The driver can use the M gear selector or paddle shifters located behind the steering wheel. A new system called Low Speed Assistance helps the car move at minimum speed in a traffic jam. One only needs to lightly nudge the accelerator peddle to activate this system. A stop – start feature is installed to further boost fuel efficiency.

The power is sent to the back thanks to a new M differential.  Thanks to an electronically controlled multi-plate limited-slip system it hard to have a rear wheel spin with the M5 at the beginning. The system also boosts the launch control system meaning that one can launch from a specific point and accelerate to a desired speed without spinning the rear wheels. Its control unit is connected with the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system that ensures that ensures the rear wheels handle the power perfectly at any surface. The stability of the M5 is further boosted by electronically controlled dumpers and a rigid sports chassis.

M-NIFICENT INTERIOR
The interior is as delightful as the exterior. Open the aluminium doors and M5 lettered door slits invite you in the amazing interior consisting of bespoke M sports seats, fine-grain merino leather and exclusive aluminium interior trim strips on the dashboard. The iDrive control system consists of a 10.2 inch control display located at the centre of the dashboard. It has been slightly angled to face the driver for easier visibility. One operates the system by a knob selector located next to the M shift selector. At the multifunctional steering are two M buttons.

Cockpit
The first, marked M1 sets the car up for sporty feel while the M2 button sets up the car for a comfortable cruise mode. However the driver can manually configure the car through the iDrive system. The instrument cluster, consisting of black-panel-technology, includes classical circular instruments in traditional BMW M car style, with red needles and white illumination. The shift program, currently selected and gear engaged are shown in the centre of the instrument cluster. Feedback from all the drive and chassis settings selected is also displayed in the cockpit.

Bespoke M seats
A Head-Up Display comes as standard in the M5. The system projects important information on the windscreen, directly in front of the driver's field of vision by use of full spectrum of colours. The iDrive system can also be integrated with an iPhone, smart phones as well as music players. An application is available for iPhone users that enable them to receive facebook or tweeter post from their accounts, real time weather and traffic information. Four-zone climate control keeps occupants comfortable as the electrically controlled front seats heat the driver. A glass roof boost the mood of the interior as surround sound fills the whole car from six amazing speakers.

SAFETY SYSTEMS
BMW M5 employs the services of the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Cornering Brake Control (CBC), Dynamic Brake Control (DBC), Brake Assistant, Fading Compensation, Brake Drying function and Start-Off Assistant. It also has 10 airbags for improved occupant safety in a crash.
Best looking M5 ever

Other optional system are Park Distance Control, a rear view camera, High-Beam Assistant, Speed Limit Info, the Lane Change Warning System, the Lane Departure Warning System, Surround View and BMW Night Vision with pedestrian recognition. All this many assistance systems ensure that the M5 remains unscratched at any given situation.
